The Problem with Omega 3’s

Omega 3 fats are vital to heart health, the problem is, a lot of us are not consuming near enough of these very important fats. Our Midwestern diets do not include a lot of fish, and seafood.  We’ve also been mislead to believe all fats are bad, which is very untrue. Our mid-western diets put us at a dangerous ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fats. and this can lead to major health issues, like heart attacks. The good news is you can start getting into better diet habits today by reading ahead!

Fish isn’t a common food in our diets, unless you count the greasy fish fry’s people eat on Friday nights, which you should not! Thanks to our very distant proximity to the sea, we do not have an appetite for fish. If you are not a big fish eater, I recommend you start experimenting. There are many great ways to cook with shrimp. salmon, and tuna that are both healthy and delicious.

If you absolutely cannot eat fish due to issues with flavor there are many other ways to consume omega 3 fats, and you should practice these habits everyday. Avocados, chia seeds, olive oil, and assorted nuts are all high in omega 3 fats. Avocados are great on salads, sandwiches, and in smoothies. Olive oil is great to cook with, and use in natural salad dressings. Chia seeds, flax seeds, and nuts are great in smoothies or on top of yogurt. There are many more options use your resources and try to eat omega 3s in every meal.

Currently, a large amount of the population consumes omega 6 fats and omega 3 fats at a 20:1 ratio. This is so dangerous. This unbalanced ratio is why we are seeing so many heart attacks, and issues related to cardiovascular problems. A good ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 fats would be 1:1 or 2:1, so our population is very distant to where we need to be. You can impact this ratio in your diet by getting a source of omega 3s in every meal, as suggested before!  If you need some guidance, please let me know!
