An Ode To Combat Sports

Combat sports have played a major role in my life and in this blog I would like to highlight some of the reasons why combat sports are worth trying, regardless of your age, or physical level. Read on to learn all of the awesome benefits of combat sports.

Combat sports have played a major role in my life and in this blog I would like to highlight some of the reasons why combat sports are worth trying, regardless of your age, or physical level. “Combat sport” is a broad term for kickboxing, karate, wrestling, jiu jitsu, ju du, and all other martial arts. Combat sports relieve stress, teach discipline, and effectively condition the body in a variety of ways.

My experience with martial arts began when I was around 8 years old. My mom enrolled me in Tae Kwon Do, and although my experience was brief, the repetitive kicking helped me develop great hip flexibility that has carried over into my late 30’s. 

In junior high I joined the Auburndale Wrestling team, which shifted my life in so many positive ways. The grind of hard practices made me tougher, I became confident enough to stand up to bullies, and I learned the value of practice. 

Ask anyone who wrestled and they’ll tell you that they learned many life lessons from their experience as a wrestler. 

As an adult I’ve experimented with MMA, and kickboxing. These sports have opened the doors that have led me to where I am today. The passion I developed for MMA pushed me to become a personal trainer, and my passion for combat has motivated me to introduce my clients to the basics of combat sports. 

Enrolling in combat sports could have a major impact in some facet of your life too. The discipline, confidence, and strength you acquire as a fighter transfers over to how you deal with high pressure situations, and how you cope with stress.  

Today, although my fighting days are behind me, I enjoy teaching clients of all different ages and skill ranges, the art of kickboxing. The thing that still surprises me is how many people fall in love with the sport. 

I’ve had clients in their 80s fall in love with kickboxing, I’ve seen the quietest little mouse of a woman turn into a pad smashing machine, and I’ve watched a lot of super stressed adults unload their tension throwing roundhouse kicks into the side of a heavy bag. 

Through seeing these experiences I have come to realize combat sports are for everyone, and I encourage everyone that enters Peak Physique to come to our Thursday Kickboxing classes.
